The Role of Pop Culture in Youth Values
Popular culture, also known simply as pop culture, is a
collection of trends, patterns and ideas that are easily recognized and liked by
the general public. Its elements can take on pretty much any form: art, music,
fashion or even slang and gestures. Pop culture has always been a part of society,
but thanks to many recent technological advancements and changes in the
entertainment industry its reach and the role it plays in our daily life is
greater than ever before.
That is especially the case with the modern youth, who thanks
to widespread access to the internet and social media interact with elements of
pop culture hundreds of times every day, even if they don’t realize it at
first. As a result of such exposure the values and perspectives of young people
are often influenced and sometimes even completely changed by these
interactions.
Not Just
Entertainment: How do Music and Movies Influence The Youth’s View of The World?
In pop culture music is mainly seen as means of
entertainment. Because of that very fact it appeals to a wide variety of
people, and often serves as a universal language of sorts. No matter a person’s
gender, ethnicity or culture, everyone listens to some kind of music; whether
it is rock, kpop or jazz. And thanks to that universal language there are many
cases where people, who otherwise would have nothing in common, manage to
connect with eachother through music.
Aside from just entertainment music is also a form of art,
and just like all art it is created to both express and deeply resonate with
people’s emotions and life experiences. It can help a person relax or even make
them cry. In pop culture music can play a remarkable role in shaping social
norms and movements aswell as define entire cultures and time periods, pass on
messages and tell stories. Pretty much every distinct type of music carries
with it certain values that influence those listening to them, that most often
being the youth.
Movies, just like music, also primarily serve as both
entertainment and form of artistic expression. Ever since the first movies
started being made they have always played a significant role in people’s life
due to their power to provoke thoughts, evoke emotions and inspire creativity
in the viewers. With a variety of genres and productions movies as a medium are
a yet another form of universal language. For many they are a brief escape from
reality, and for others a valuable lesson in life.
A good example of movies reflecting modern youth values in
the recent years is the increase in productions that touch upon topics that
were rarely spoken of until recent years, such as opposition to conventional
gender roles, openly expressive LGBTQ+ couples and matters tied to mental
health.
Despite the positive impact of both music and movie pop
culture on the youth it is important to note that it is not always the case and
that not every piece of such culture should be taken as an example to follow.
Instead of aiming to improve the world, many such media instead choose to feed
into negative stereotypes and try to convey harmful messages. The good thing is
that modern youth grows increasingly critical of those types of music and
movies, but until they are completely gone it is best to be careful with what
young people let themselves get influenced by.
In Fame We Trust: How Celebrities and
Influencers Are Shaping Youth Values and Ethics
In a modern world
where we spend most of our time online, it’s no surprise that celebrities and
influencers have a greater impact than ever. They don't just tell us what to
buy; they are influencers of thought, behavior, and even morality. The days
when “heroes” were limited to parents or teachers are long behind us. Today,
it’s far more likely that a teenager looks up to influencers—people who are not
only entertainers but also lifestyle gurus and moral guides. A single post or a
video from a popular person can raise awareness among young people about
important issues like mental health, the environment, or social justice. When
someone famous with millions of followers and likes speaks about body
positivity or addresses inequality, their words reach millions and shape how
young people perceive the world.
However, their
influence is a double-edged sword. Alongside meaningful and empowering
messages, young people are increasingly exposed to filtered realities. When
influencers present an idealized lifestyle under the guise of authenticity, it
can lead to lower self-esteem, a desire to achieve unrealistic goals, and
a continuous feeling of insufficiency.
In the end, young
people must be more conscious of what they see online and avoid blindly
following trends. Developing personal values that aren't solely influenced by
others is essential. While influencers and celebrities will always shape
culture, it’s up to us to decide how much of that culture we allow to shape who
we are.
The Rebellious Generation: The Rise of
Counterculture and Rebellion Against Mainstream Values
Every generation
has its own unique way of pushing boundaries and challenging so-called
"common values," but youth today are doing it louder and more
creatively than ever before. From rejecting traditional gender roles and
identity norms to questioning capitalism and taking less conventional career
paths (e.g. in art), today's young people are fighting against ideals that were
once considered sacred by society. The rise of counterculture today goes beyond
rebellion—it's a full-scale shift in values. Gen Z and younger millennials are
questioning the general norms by advocating for the climate, fighting for
mental health awareness, and promoting a more authentic lifestyle. The internet
has provided a platform for young people to share their opinions, organize
protests, and educate others on important issues. Interestingly, what was once
seen as "controversial" is now becoming normalized and mainstream.
Thrifted clothes, tattoos, piercings, gender fluidity, shifts in traditional
gender roles, and more open conversations about mental health are no longer
considered weird—they're increasingly accepted in many circles. This shift
marks a deep cultural transformation. The rise of counterculture reflects a
desire to create a more inclusive, compassionate, and ultimately better world.
It’s not about rejecting old values but imagining new possibilities that feel
more authentic and human.

I really like how you had provided both the positive and the negative sides of the influence young people recieve these days. The emphasis on how in the end it is us that choose what to believe in, and how it is our decisions that shapes us and our values is a message I took favour in and believe is something that we shouldn't ever forget.

DeletePop culture is an extremely fun part of humanity at large, but also, like you said, it shapes the young generation's values. It's a good thing you also clarified it can harmful sometimes, but as long as people don't forget to take everything with a grain of slat I think po culture is still a wanderful thing
ReplyDeleteVery interesting topic covering a lot of stuff:) I agree that influencers have a lot of authority and some of them could be abusing it in a bad way, so people must chose carefully who influences them. Also, even though people nowadays accept "controversial" looks like tattoos and piercings, in my opinion a person shouldn't have too many of these things because then it looks just weird. Well done!:)
ReplyDeleteI really love your blog!! This blog gives a sharp, balanced take on how pop culture shapes youth today—entertaining, thought-provoking, and very relevant. ANDDDD... You're also telling me my obsession with thrift stores, sad indie songs, and quoting movies no one's seen isn't just a personality—it's a cultural movement? Gen Z really said 'rebellion, but make it aesthetic.
